Why I Want to Be an Ota - Free Essay Example
When I was seven my papaw had a stroke. He stayed in the hospital a few weeks and when he came home he had a new bed and bars in the bathroom. Michael started coming to papawââ¬â¢s not long after that. It was confusing and difficult to watch Michael help papaw out of bed, or brush his teeth, or tie his shoes. Over time we began to notice improvements. Papaw needed help with his buttons but not his shirt. Michael would make the coffee but papaw could pour it. By the time papaw died he needed much less therapy but we still saw Michael every few weeks. The patience, compassion and encouragement of one person improved my familyââ¬â¢s last years with its patriarch in countless ways. It was this improvement that inspired me to pursue a career as an occupational therapist assistant. Occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) ââ¬Å"provide rehabilitative services to persons with mental, physical, emotional, or developmental impairmentsâ⬠. (Occupational Outlook Handbook) As an OTA I will be responsible for the ââ¬Å"hands-onâ⬠portion of a patientââ¬â¢s therapy as well as all documentation on a patientââ¬â¢s progress and changes to therapy that are needed. OTAs guide a patients therapy based on ââ¬Å"a treatment plan developed in collaboration with an occupational therapistâ⬠. (OOH) Upon graduation from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, a passing grade on a certifying exam is necessary to obtain employment as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). Once certified, COTAs face no shortage of employment options. In 2008, OTA was named as one of the fifty fastest-growing recession-proof jobs with an annual percentage growth of over twenty-five percent. Biotech Week) These positions can be held in such places as nursing care facilities, elementary and secondary schools, hospitals, or outpatient care centers. An OTA can look forward to an average annual salary of over fifty thousand dollars with offices of other health care practitioners offering the highest average salary. The growth of this field is even more advantageous locally, with Ohio having the ââ¬Å"highest concentration of workers in this occupationâ⬠in the United States. OOH) Possible local employers include Select Specialty Hospital, a long term acute care hospital, and CareTenders, a member of Almost Family which is a leading provider of home health nursing, rehabilitation and personal care services. An OTA has to have a wide variety of skills at their disposal to handle changing environments and problems that arise in a variety of patientââ¬â¢s therapy. They have to be dependable and honest since they are required to work directly with patients with little to no supervision. An OTA needs to have a high level of self control and the ability to be flexible considering therapy can be decidedly frustrating for patients who have lost independence and mobility and must now rely on others. (O*NET OnLine) Being a good student is paramount due to an OTA being ââ¬Å"expected to continue professional development by participating in continuing education courses and workshops in order to maintain certificationâ⬠. (OOH) Lives are changed everyday by occupational therapy assistants. I have the dedication, compassion, and ability to celebrate every miniscule improvement needed to become a successful OTA. This a quickly growing field where I can use the talents I already possess to excel. I can easily recall the differences made in my papawââ¬â¢s life through occupational therapy and the way every advancement in mobility or independence was as exciting as it would be with a new born. Michael became as close as family through his work with papaw. I want to touch lives. I want to make a difference. I want to be an occupational therapy assistant. Essays on Summary of Bennis, Biederman, Organizing Genius: The secrets of Creative Collaboration. 1998, ISBN: 9780201339895, Basic Books Book Report/Review Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration of the of theConcerned Professor December 9, 2010 Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration The book ââ¬ËOrganizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaborationââ¬â¢ by Bennis and Biederman, to a great extent redefines the concept of leadership and collaboration, in the context of the contemporary business environment. The authors have aptly succeeded in making the point that the days of vertically organized business organizations, relying to a great extent on experience and skills of a selected few are over. The book under consideration has in fact well elaborated the expertise and traits, which can help organizations and individuals, compete and excel in the face of glaring constraints and challenges. The primary focus of this book is oriented around encouraging professionals to evaluate their aims and responsibilities in the context of a group or a team. In todayââ¬â¢s globalized world, the opening up of economies and the digitization of business operations, has made the notion of an ââ¬Ëall empowered leaderââ¬â¢, almost arcane. The authors convey their approach by analyzing some reputed enterprises like the production of a full length animation movie by Walt Disney, Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the first atomic weapon, the production of the first user oriented computer by Apple and Xerox and the technological breakthroughs wrought by Lockheed, to convey and establish that all these ventures relied on the cooperative collaboration of a team of versatile individuals, to succeed. The sentences from the book, which are of immense relevance for the project managers, are as follows: ââ¬Å"Being able to work with others does not necessarily mean fitting in a conventional sense.â⬠1 Conventionally the concept of team and teamwork has always been interpreted as a group of disjointed individuals, working on a project, under the benign or autocratic guidance of a larger than life team leader. However, in the true sense, teamwork is actually a synergetic assembly of individuals having skills and expertise that complement and supplement each other. In such teams, the leader stands to be one amongst the equals, whose primary function ought to be redefining reality. Thus, such teams need to be envisaged not as mechanically segregated or disjointed groups, but more as organically cohesive and collaborative entities. ââ¬Å"For Disney, as for Michelangelo, the scale of the project made collaboration a necessityâ⬠.2 This statement has never been as true as in the contemporary globalized business environment. With the melting of barriers and the transnational expansion of prospective markets, there exists no single company that has the wherewithal and resources to singlehandedly produce and market the goods and services required by the empowered customers. Hence, a collaborative approach, both within and outside the organizations can help the sustainable organizations to fast react to changes on both the supply and the demand side. No doubt, one today hears the terms like outsourcing, joint ventures, technology sharing, technology transfer and virtual companies. All these contemporary approaches to business do unexceptionally rely on collaboration amongst companies and individuals. It will be really true to say that in the current times, collaboration is more of a necessity than being just one other option. ââ¬Å"There is a kind of leader who recruits only people like himself or herself. There is another, better kind of leader who realizes you can only accomplish extraordinary things by involving excellent people who can do things that you cannot.â⬠3 Any effective leadership by necessity has to be flexible, accommodating and liberal. Also, to achieve success, the overall vision in organizations and groups also has to be collective and changeable. Only such a leadership approach could solicit a hundred percent dedication and cooperation of most of the team members. ââ¬Å"The sense of being part of a uniquely informed cadre, privy to wonderful secrets from which the rest of the world is excluded, is also a powerful social glue.â⬠4 The essence of this sentence is very relevant in the sense that modern leadership can only be effective if it inculcates in the team members a sense of pride and exclusivity about what they are doing. This automatically generates a feeling of camaraderie and cooperation in the team members. ââ¬Å"Creativity is just connecting thingsâ⬠.5 This is the one most important sentence in the book. The scale of the modern ventures, be it product development, production, packaging, logistics or marketing is too big to be guided by the talent of a single genius. In fact, in the 21st century, business is all about exploiting and utilizing the expertise of varied individuals and groups, who are dedicated to a somewhat common vision. There is no denying the fact that this book contains abundant sentences that are conducive to the understanding of the idea of leadership. However, the above 4 sentences do rendered to me some pragmatic insights pertaining to the discipline of project management. Bibliography Warren Bennis Patricia Ward Biederman. Louis riel Essay Thesis Example For Students
Louis riel Essay Thesis Louis Riel was the first child of Louis Riel Pere and Julie Lagimodire. He was born October 22, 1844 in St. Boniface. His mother was the seventh child of Jean-Baptiste Lagimodire and Marie-Anne Gaboury. Louis Riel Pere had been born at Ilela-Crosse in 1817. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste Riel dit lââ¬â¢Irlande and Marguerite Boucher. Both of Louis Rielââ¬â¢s parents were Catholics. Louis Riel spent his childhood on the east bank of the Red River, on the property of his Lagimodire grandparents. He grew up with the Mtis. He was extremely aware of his identity. At the age of ten, he began his education, and started studying at the school run by the Christian Brothers. Going to Montreal on June 1, 1858, with his Sister Valade. They travelled for five weeks before arriving in Montreal on July 5. In Montreal, Louis was admitted to the College de Montreal run by the Gentlemen of St. Sulpice. This is where he studied an eight year course of studies, which included Latin, Greek, French, English, Philosophy and Science. Louis was an excellent student and, placed himself at the top of his class. He was full of grief by the death of his father, on January 1864. Although he continued his studies, his instructors found that his attitude had changed. In March 1865, he left the College de Montreal. He was granted permission to continue his studies as a student while living wit h Nuns. After breaking the rules several times and repeatedly missing class, he was asked to leave both the College and the convent. The world which faced him as he left the College was full with strong political activity. During this period, Louis lived with his aunt, Lucie Riel, and managed to find employment in the law office. Louis fell in love with Marie Julie Guernon and even signed a marriage contract. However, this was quickly broken off as Maries parents were against their daughter marrying a Metis. Louis made his way to Chicago and St. Paul. He arrived in St. Boniface on July 26, 1868. After leaving for ten years. At this time Canada included only the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The land known as Ruperts Land, belonged to the Hudsons Bay Company. The Company appointed a governor to the Settlement positioned at the joint of the Red and the Assiniboine Rivers. Fort Garry lay in the middle of the Settlement was the headquarters of the Hudsons Bay Company. The Metis had succeeded in breaking the fur trade that the Company had held until the 1850ââ¬Ës. The years between 1850 and 1860 ended the old way of life in the North-West. Many changes had taken place in the Settlement since his Louis Riel left. With the arrival of many settlers from Ontario, and Fort Garry had become an active commercial centre. For economic and political reasons, these Canadians were opposed to the Companys influence, while the Metis were worried about the future under the Canadian government. They were afraid the country would be occupied by people from Ontario and that this would create a problem for the Mtis. Since the new settlers would be Protestants, and the French-speaking Mtis would be Catholic. The Metis were also afraid of loosing their land. In 1869, the Canadian government sent John Stoughton Dennis to Red River to survey the land. He was badly treated by the Mtis. To add to the Mtis concern, the survey was being carried out in like the Ontario style of survey, in squares, instead of the system of long, narrow lots. When John Stoughton arrived in Fort Garry, conflict broke out. On October 11, 1869, sixteen Mtis led by Louis Riel stopped a crew of surveyors on the property of Louis. This was a very important incident, first, because it was the first act of resistance to the move of the Settlement to Canada and secondly, because it made Louis Riel as the leader of the Mtis. William McDougall, who had been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ruperts Land. He set out for Red River to take possession of the North-West Territory for Canada. He was accompanied by army members with 300 rifles. When the news reached the Mtis, they decided to make their own army. On October 16, Riel was elected secretary of the Mtis National Committee, and John Bruce was elected president. Five days later, the Committee sent a warning to McDougall telling him not to enter the country without permission from the Committee. Riel let it be known that he was opposed to McDougalls arrival and asked the English to join him. He told them that he remained faithful to the British Crown but that he objected to the unfair way the government came into the West. On October 30, McDougall, Cameron and Joseph-Alfred Norbert Provencher, arrived in Pembina where they read the Committees note. They refused to listen to this warning and the next day, Cameron and Provencher went to St. Norbert where t hey were stopped and told to go back to the American border. On November 2, the Mtis took possession of Fort Garry. They than established their control over the area. However, their power was quite unstable as they could only rely on the support of the French Catholic population. A series of meetings were held to encourage supporters, but without any success. Several people against the way McDougall was treated. However, an agreement was reached on the research of a list of rights. On November 23, Riel established a provisional government. This surprised the English-speaking people. On December 10, Riels Provisional Governments flag flew on the flag pole at Fort Garry. On December 27, Louis Riel became president of the Provisional Government. To this point in time the Canadian government had been unaware of all the problems at Red River. Macdonald sent a special commissioner to explain his position to the Mtis. Health Benefits of Martial Arts EssayGabriel Dumont and 350 Mtis were to defend Batoche. Dumont believed that the only way of to defend this was through Indian warfare. He wanted to attack quickly by surprise than immediately leaving. Riel was against this plan. He wanted to avoid violence as long as possible. He wanted to carry out negotiations. This attitude of Riel had very bad consequences for the Mtis. It allowed Middleton to come to Batoche in safety. Dumont then decided to set a trap for him at Fish Creek. On April 24, Riel and Dumont set out from Batoche with 200 Mtis. As they arrived at Fish Creek, Riel changed his mind and wanted the Mtis to return to Batoche. At that moment a messenger brought word to them that a Mounted Police were approaching Batoche from the direction of QuAppelle. Dumont sent 50 men back to defend the settlement, under Riels leadership. With Gabriel Dumont in command, the battle of Fish Creek ended in a draw. . In Batoche Riel was beginning to have d oubts about the decisions he had made. Riel asked Poundmaker and Big Bear for help, but they would not arrive in time. Middleton stopped for two weeks to rest his men. The fourth day of the battle, the Mtis were defeated. The two leaders reacted differently to this defeat. Both of the leader were hidden in the woods in Batoche. Riel, after checking the safety of his family, went into the woods to pray. He made no attempt to flee. When Middleton told him to surrender, he replied that he would give himself up to fulfill Gods will and that he wanted freedom for all of his people. He said that he would surrender so that he could continue to defend the Mtis cause. Riel was taken to Regina. Dumont, tried unsuccessfully to bring back Batoche. When he heard that Riel had given himself up, Dumont left for the United States. The rebellion was over. Poundmaker surrendered on May 23, but Big Bear finally gave himself up on July 2. On July 6, 1885, Riel was charged with high treason. The trial opened on July 20, with Riel pleading not guilty. This trial was to have bad consequences for Riel and for Canada. The ju ry was all Protestant. Riels lawyer wanted to plead that Riel was insane and not responsible for his acts. Riel was against to this plan that his lawyers had the judge rule that he did not have permission to speak. The witnesses testimonies were damning. They insisted that Riel had been mentally unstable before and during the rebellion. Towards the end of the trial, Riel was allowed to speak. After a moment of prayer, he reviewed the troubles in the North-West, beginning with the sufferings his people had suffered and the governments not doing anything about this. He said that he was not insane and that he did not want to be set free by reason of insanity. He did not reject that he had previously been in a mental hospital, but pointed out that the doctors had certified that he was cured. Riel was sentenced to hang on September 18. Than is was postponed to November 16. On the day of the execution got a visit from his family and on November 6, he wrote his will. During the night of the 15th and the early hours of the 16th, he wrote one last letter to his mother and received the last finances. At 8:00 a.m., he climbed the stairs to the stage for his execution. On November 19, a service was sung for the rest of Rielââ¬â¢s soul at St. Marys Church in Regina. On December 9, his body was returned to St. Vital where it layed for 2 days in his mothers house. A funeral song was sung December 12 at St. Boniface Cathedral and his body was buried in the church yard. There lived and died a man who we recognize today as the founder of the Province of Manitoba and defender of the rights of the Mtis and of French Canadians. Bibliography:
